Be Comforted

Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death. Gen 24:67 (NIV)

We all could use a little comforting now and then. In the above passage, Isaac was heart-sick after his mother’s death. God knew exactly what Isaac needed to overcome his grief, pick up the pieces and begin again. God didn’t send a shooting star or a bolt of lightning to make him feel better for the moment—God had a long-term solution. God sent Rebekah, a beautiful bride, to love and comfort Isaac and become his life-long companion.

How God must have felt as He looked down upon the grieving and heartbroken Isaac. He must have been dying to let Isaac in on the secret. Comfort was on its way and her name was Rebekah. God must have wanted to shout it from the heavens. Don't give up, Isaac. I've not forgotten you. Hang on a little longer--comfort is on its way.

You are no less loved than Isaac. God knows those worrisome barbs that nag your mind and keep you awake at night. He not only sees, but He cares for you. He comforted Isaac; He will comfort you. Just as God had a wonderful future planned for Isaac, He has one for you as well.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 describes God as “the God of all comfort who comforts us in all our troubles.”

He doesn’t just tell us to do better or point out where we’ve gone wrong—He calms our ruffled feathers, soothes our aching hearts, and encourages us to trust in Him. He sends friends with messages of love and caring, sermons with tidbits of hope, and maybe even a devotional that lifts the burden and reminds you that God has not abandoned you. Comfort is on its way!

Lord, be our comfort today. Remind us of the wonderful surprises and delights you’ve planned for us. We receive your comfort in the Name of Jesus. Amen.
