DISAPPOINTMENT IN GOD
But we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
Talk to many people and you will learn about their disappointment in God. Perhaps they suffered a tragedy or lost someone close to them. Maybe they prayed a prayer that wasn’t answered or hoped for a miracle that didn’t happen.
But why do some people allow a disappointment to drive them away from God while others take that same disappointment and cling to God all the more?
In 2 Kings 4: 18-28 we read the story of a woman who was disappointed how her life had turned out. After many childless years, Elisha the prophet prayed for her and she birthed a son. But later this child died. The woman found Elisha and said, “Did I ask you for a son, my lord? Didn’t I tell you, ‘don’t raise my hopes’?” 2 Kings 4:28
She might have gone into mourning, secluded herself in her home, had a temper tantrum and refused to trust God again. I can understand those actions. But instead, she searched for Elisha and asked him why. She wasn’t ready to give up and slip back into the hopelessness of her former life. She sought God and a miracle happened. Elisha prayed for her son and he came back from the dead. (v36).
Maybe that is the difference. Some people experience disappointment and give up. But those who seek God all the more in spite of their pain see their situation change to something positive, experience God’s miracle.
How about you? Are you disappointed in God? Please heed the lesson of this Shunammite woman and refuse to give up. Seek God all the more until you find your miracle. Don’t let anything rob you of a life filled with the joy of knowing Jesus Christ.
Dear Lord, each of us carries disappointments. Give us the gifts of hope and faith to press in closer. Turn our disappointments into something miraculous.
