A Cupbearer to the King

O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man. I was cupbearer to the king. Nehemiah 1:11

Persons of influence are found in unexpected places. In this passage we see how God placed Nehemiah in a strategic position. What was his role? Not a diplomat. Not an ambassador. Not a judge. Not someone of royal birth. But a cupbearer—a waiter, a servant. And yet God placed him in that very spot and used his relationship with the king to rebuild a nation.

Today you are in a place of influence as well. Look around you. God has allowed you to be exactly where you are. Though you may be only a cupbearer, God has a plan for you to impact the world around you. Do what you can. Maybe you’ll rub shoulders with kings. Obey God’s smallest of commands. Watch your world change.

Dear Lord, open our eyes and allow us to find ways to impact our world for you. Amen.
